City’s first painted intersection More planned for the future GEORGIA O’CONNOR HARDING

There could be more painted intersections in Riccarton on the horizon like this one on the intersection of Shand Crescent and Tara St. The brightly-coloured Shand Crescent and Tara St intersection has come alive after a two day long painting spree – and the group behind it want more in Riccarton. Inspired by the painting of intersections in Portland, Oregon, – the Riccarton-west community group wanted to brighten up the area with a picture that represented their community. The community as well as people from around the city gathered over the weekend to paint the city’s first illustrated intersection. Project co-ordinator Sue Ramsay (inset) said the day was about building community and getting people involved, by developing a sense of pride and ownership. Ms Ramsay said future community road paintings are on the horizon, but is yet to pick the spots. They want the suburb to be known as the “painted

intersections area of the city. “We’ve got a better idea of the quantity of paint we need. We have learnt how to layout a grid which is something we have had to experiment and how to scale up a picture. Several weeks ago a community design workshop was held where local residents pitched design ideas for the intersection. “We got about 90 designs out of it, she said. The ideas were then passed onto Design and Arts College of New Zealand student Liselle Silver who created the theme of the intersection. The paint is expected to last two years. The project received support from local community organisation the SafeGrowth group along with the local Neighbourhood Support group, the Riccarton Baptist Church and The Student Volunteer Army. HAVE YOUR SAY: What do you think about the new intersection between Shand Crescent and Tara St? Would you like to see this in your community? Email your views to georgia.oconnor@starmedia. kiwi

As part of “Knowing Your Neighbour is a Piece of Cake”, children at Aratupu Preschool and Nursery hand-delivered banana cake for residents at the retirement village in Harewood. The project was started by the Christchurch Methodist Mission and The Neighbourhood Project to encourage neighbours to get to know one another through cake. Christchurch Methodist Mission fundraising and communications manager Dave Marsh said it was about trying to get people aware of their neighbours especially where people have moved a lot since the earthquake. “It really improves the wellbeing in the community,” Mr Marsh said. St John was alerted to the incident between Main South Rd near Islington Tavern at 7pm last Wednesday. Two people were assessed at the scene. One person was taken to Christchurch Hospital. AID FOR FIJI Canterbury University students have sent a 6m shipping container with emergency supplies to Fiji following the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston. UC student Nikheel Nambiar set about creating a fundraising and relief campaign for Fijians last month after his father raised the idea. The effort filled a shipping container with essential emergency supplies in just over a week. An estimated $80,000 in goods have been received – 250 pairs of safety boots, shoes, 3500 exercise books, two tonnes of canned food, one tonne of bottled water, two tonnes of baby supplies and household goods, milk powder, 300kg of rice, and flour. Talk about depression Time to check Mental health, especially due to the Canterbury earthquake sequence, is a big topic of discussion at the moment. Liv Kerr, who is Villa Maria College’s head girl, discusses what it is like as a teenager dealing with depression. Do you have a story to share? Email caitlin.miles@starmedia. kiwi In my short 17 years on this earth I have experienced many things – 13 years of schooling, learning how to drive manually (I can assure you that this was not an easy feat), starting my first part-time job, and depression. It may seem very casual to slip a word such as depression into what would seem a pretty lighthearted introduction but mental health is something that needs to be addressed. It cannot be ignored as it is prominent in many people’s lives, especially here in Canterbury. The cause? Well, to put it simply, it is due to the 2011 earthquake, from which we are still feeling the effects. As a teenager, life is hard enough without having to experience a

natural disaster as we are already consumed with trying to discover who we are and where we stand in our community. Not surprisingly, when depression entered my life, I was already going through some pretty dramatic changes so I didn’t recognise its symptoms. I had just started high school and my body was doing all sorts of weird things. I was beginning to question so many areas of my life and I just put these negative feelings down to puberty and moved on. I wish I knew then what I know now. It is incredibly important for teenagers to be aware of the difference between having a bad day and the symptoms of depression and other mental health problems.

In addition, we as a community need to remove the stigmas associated with mental health so that young people do not fear discussing their emotions because it’s hard enough feeling like that and even worse if you can’t talk about it. As Head Girl of Villa Maria College I want to educate my fellow peers about what to do if they ever find themselves feeling like I did. I want to tell them that life can and will get better. Just share your experiences with someone you trust and support one other.

MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

A few southerlies, colder weather and you start to realise winter is coming. That’s not to say we still haven’t got some 30 deg C days ahead which makes the actions of whoever lit the fire in Bottle Lake last Friday night even more distasteful. This incident tied up six fire trucks, six water tankers and a command unit for nearly five hours. During that time anything that happened elsewhere in Christchurch faced a delayed turnout as fire appliances were sent from further away. Woolston’s truck was sent to a small fire at a rest home in Parklands because St Albans and Wainoni were at Bottle Lake.

capable at looking up websites so after reading your article I looked up the Awatea Rd Reserve and found the plan showing where the new trees will be planted, with walkways and where the memorial to the airmen will be located.

Addington went to calls in Merivale because again St Albans and city station trucks were at Bottle Lake. This is all normal stuff when a big incident takes up lots of our resources. But when that big incident is the result of the deliberate act of some low life it becomes galling. Because one day all the circumstances will line up. And someone will die. The proximity of winter means there will be a change in fire causes. It’s probably a good time to prevent one of them if you use an electric blanket. There are at least a couple of businesses I know in the city that offer electric safety checks on these. Every year they should be inspected and doing it now will see you set up before the first really cold night sees fingers on switches. My husband thinks the memorial is a good idea as he has always wondered where the location of their crash was. So my family is in favour of the park being developed and we look forward to walking our dog there.

a fantastic occasion and the new warehouse would enable the company to store many hundreds of tonnes of seed. “The other reason [for moving sites] was that the new motorway is coming through here so with Hornby being the hub for a lot of industrial business we needed to make sure we had good future access and profiling and positioning for our business.”

Couplands Bakeries is back supporting the Variety Children’s Charity in this year’s Variety Trillian Bash. One of the drivers, David Drake, of Rolleston, is being supported by the Christchurch business. Mr Drake has taken part in 18 bashes in New Zealand and 12 in Australia. The Variety Bash is a car rally that travels hundreds of kilometres during one week in March each year fundraising for Kiwi kids, entertaining around 4000 children and telling the Variety story. This year Mr Drake will be driving in a Ford Fairlane, which has the names of all the bashes he has attended across the bonnet. On the trip all the bash crews from around New Zealand will be treated to Couplands’ products along the way. Mr Drake signs up every year because he enjoys being part of something that helps so many different kids. “When you are part of donating a much-needed bike, or wheelchair, or a laptop or school uniform to assist a child in his or her development – and you see the delight on their faces, well, it is moving, and sometimes you shed a tear or two,” Mr Drake said.

involved in city’s development There is a concept I’ve worked on with the idea of Christchurch being a prototype city – where people can test ideas that can be scaled or replicated in a global context. I am hoping people can come here and start up their own businesses that can be scaled internationally but also in an architectural way. I understand with your job you get to go to a lot of cool events and take photos. Yes, I am a photographer myself as well – that is another passion of mine. One of the ways I love to give back to the community is by documenting the events around. I’ve taken photos for the urban regeneration initiative Gap Filler which activates vacant sites around the city. I did photos for social enterprise accelerator Live the Dream. I have also done a lot of social media photography. Do you ever have time to relax? I try and do everything within my week – that includes the evenings as well. The weekend is the time I relax although I know some of the conferences are in the weekends. I try and

make that available for myself. I do taekwondo – that helps me get my exercise in the week. But it is great to relax and kick some stuff. I’ve been doing it for two years after I moved to Christchurch three years ago. Where are you from originally? I am from Guangzhou, China but I have been living in New Zealand for about 20 years. I studied my Masters in Architecture in Auckland which I graduated from in 2013. It would have been a while ago but how did you find the

cultural difference between New Zealand and China? I don’t remember it that much. I went back to China to study middle school. I guess for me I am more Kiwi than I am Chinese. It was difficult for me to readapt when I went back to the Chinese culture. I would love to learn more about Asia in general and I am part of the Asia-New Zealand leadership network. Hence why I am active in that cultural exchange scene. Do you think Christchurch is a very multicultural area? It could develop more. I don’t actually see a lot of Asians or Chinese people in the central city. But I think it is improving. Pre-earthquake I understand it was quite monotone but now it is becoming more multicultural because of how people are coming into the city. But I would love to see more diversity in the city. When did you learn Chinese? I came here when I was little so I knew a bit of Chinese. But I went back when I was about 1314 and stayed there for two and a half years. That is when I fully picked up the reading, writing

and the language. Was it difficult? Yes, it was in the beginning – it was me just trying to write half English and then half Chinese. But I did go to Chinese school before then. When I was back I was fully immersed in the culture. Do you miss China? In a way I guess. I miss the food and my family. I think there should be a lot more lantern festival type events and I would love to see more of the noodle market. It would be cool to have it more regularly throughout the year. Do you have quite a big fam-

ily over in China? I don’t have any siblings but I have a large extended family. My parents are here but my extended family is still in China so I try and head back every couple of years to just visit. With the whole rebuild I take it you see Christchurch as a place full of potential? Yes, definitely and I would highly recommend everyone to live and contribute to the city in their own way. I think the city is a nice place for someone like me to work in. It allows me to test my own ideas and the Ministry of Awesome is a great place to work.

How are your roads being repaired? • SCIRT’s repair programme is delivering functional and serviceable roads. • The extent of road repairs varies from full reconstruction where there is extensive earthquake damage to isolated patch repairs. • The result may look a little patchy, but will be done to a high standard and the Council will monitor the condition and prioritise further work as part of its maintenance programme. • So far SCIRT has completed 83 per cent of its road repair programme. • After SCIRT completes its work at the end of this year, the Christchurch City Council and NZ Transport Agency will continue road repairs in their programmes.

Fascinated with flight A group of Spreydon School pupils had the opportunity to visit the Air Force Museum. The year 5 and 6 pupils learned about the impact of war and how technologies influenced flight. Year 5 and 6 teacher Andrea Barr said the pupils were challenged to build an aircraft model and they learnt about the differ-

Riders take their mounts to success Two Burnside High School students have placed well in the recent Canterbury secondary schools show jumping competition at McLeans Island. The inter-secondary competition had 21 schools involved with 32 teams competing. Burnside High School student Max Shank placed second in the year 10 show

hunter class while securing a solid seventh in the 1.05m class. Year 9 student Abby Sinclair placed fourth in the show-hunter category for her age group. Burnside High School is now looking forward to the teams dressage competition in April and teams one-day eventing taking place in August.

Sharp bowling, positive batting take Halswell to victory Halswell have given themselves a great opportunity to win the Robbies Senior A two-day cricket competition with some sharp bowling and positive batting. Addington won the toss and batted first at Halswell Domain on Saturday. Going into the match, both sides were among three teams vying for first place in the final round of competition. Halswell opening bowlers Geoff Barclay and Leighton Johnston bowled well in tandem and after 20 overs Addington were 32-3. Halswell used three bowlers

Halswell then went on the attack with the bat, Barclay smashing the Addington bowlers all around the domain for his 82. Dayle Eathorne, who has been in fine form, again batted well in the Halswell middle order for 64. Halswell were bowled out for 218, leaving Addington nine overs to bat. Barclay and Johnston claimed another wicket each to leave Addington on 152. The match will be completed this Saturday.

Hillmorton exceeds expectations at champs Hillmorton High School’s dragonboating team won their category in the the Aoraki South Island Dragonboating Championships on the weekend. The team came first in the mixed team category held at Lake Hood. School’s sports coordinator and manager of the team Andrea Kendrew said students exceeded her

Taking part in the City2Surf fun run for a great cause BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Emma Cooper loves dogs so much, she is going to dress up as one to take part in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero. The 31-year-old will run in the iconic event on Sunday, dressed as a dalmatian to raise money for Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust. The trust, which is based in Bromley, takes in dogs from Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri pounds, and finds them new homes. Miss Cooper has been volunteering at the trust for two years, and walks the dogs every Wednesday. She said it was a worthy cause, and The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero was the perfect way to raise awareness and money for any charity. “It’s such a big run, so many people do it and it’s big in Christchurch.” She hopes to raise $2000 for the trust, which would go a long way. So far she has raised about $200. Participants in this year’s 14km event will set off at Centennial Park in Spreydon, while those taking part in the

Kids’ lunches pack a salty punch K

IDS’ LUNCHBOXES, often exceed the total recommended daily salt intake. That’s the finding from Consumer NZ’s investigation, published at consumer.org.nz and in the March edition of Consumer magazine, to conincide with World Salt Awareness Week. Excessive sodium from the salt in our diet can lead to high blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke, and creating a taste for too much salt early in life can predispose children to various health problems later in life. Salt is often unexpectedly present in processed foods. Consumer gives the example of a child’s lunchbox containing a ham and cheese bread roll, a packet of Shultz Mini Pretzels and a packet of Select Little Families Biscuits. The salt content of this menu exceeds the maximum daily limit for salt recommended for a 5-6 yearold and is more than 90 per cent for a child 11-14. Stroke Foundation national health promotion manager Jo Jarden said: “Tastes and eating habits can be formed early, so feeding your children fresh unprocessed foods is the best way to set them on a healthy path. Processed foods put

more salt in our diet than we need and create a taste for it that can lead to overconsumption. If we start our children on fresh, natural food instead of salty processed snacks we do them the greatest favour.”

PROCESSED FOODS PUT MORE SALT IN OUR DIET THAN WE NEED.

Consumer highlights many of the conveniently pre-packed snacks that are so handy for lunchboxes, but so full of salt. Chippies, minipretzels and crackers are top offenders. Foods that may be thought of as ‘fresh’ such as cheese, ham and other cooked or cured meats are also processed using salt. Spreads like Vegemite or peanut butter can also be very salty. Even sweet foods

such as biscuits contain salt and add to the daily intake. There are lower salt options available, such as certain brands of popcorn, tuna in springwater, and unsalted peanut butter. Fresh fruit and vegetable options such as carrot sticks are another good way to avoid salt. Last year Consumer highlighted how excessively salty diets were ‘a ticking time bomb’ could raise the

■ Too much salt in the diet contributes to raised blood pressure, the biggest single risk factor for stroke. ■ The Ministry of Health recommended maximum daily salt intake for 4-8 year olds is 3.5g but the 2009 Total Diet Survey found that average intakes were over 4.5g, even before salt added at the table was taken into account. ■ Low-salt foods have less than 120mg of sodium per 100g. ■ High-salt foods have more than 600mg of sodium per 100g. ■ The Stroke Foundation has a handy online quiz at saltwise.co.nz blood pressures of children. “Busy parents find it hard to read all the small print on pre-packed children’s snacks to check how much salt is in them,” said Jo Jarden. “The food industry could certainly do more to provide low and no-salt options, especially in items targeted directly at children.”

Southland teacher runs around the world By Rachel Grunwell When Bill Richardson runs the Rotorua Marathon on April 30 it will be his 307th marathon. The 64-year-old Invercargill school teacher has quietly clocked up this amazing feat with his feet and barely told a soul! When he ran his 300th marathon at the Buller Gorge Marathon in February he celebrated by eating cake with run friends. The 2016 Rotorua Marathon will be a cause of celebration, too. It will be 15th lap of Lake

One sure way to get in trouble with Inland Revenue is to set up your affairs in such a way as to avoid paying tax. While tax considerations should not be the driving force behind financial decisions, there is nothing wrong with being sensible and using tax implications to help choose between options. A good place to start is to check that your tax rates are correct, particularly on bank deposits. If you haven’t given your bank your IRD number, Resident Withholding Tax (RWT) will be deducted from interest at the highest tax rate. Make sure the tax rate you have given your bank is the correct one. If in doubt about your correct rate, check the Inland Revenue website. For KiwiSaver or other managed funds, you will need a Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR), which is based on your last two years of income. If your income has changed recently, this may affect yourRWTor PIR. KiwiSaver is a form of Portfolio Investment Entity (PIE). There are many other PIEs, including managed funds and bank term deposit PIEs. The highest tax rate for a PIE is 28 per cent which means these are tax efficient for those in

17

higher tax brackets. PIEs were introduced when KiwiSaver was launched and they are much more tax efficient than earlier investment products which paid tax at the company tax rate. Chances are, if you have an old investment fund you are paying more tax than you need to and it may be time to switch your funds into a PIE. Although filing a tax return is optional for many people now, it pays to go online to the Inland Revenue website and check if you are due a refund at the end of the tax year. Never pay more tax than you need to. Liz Koh is an authorised financial adviser. The advice given is general and does not constitute specific advice to any person.A disclosure statement is free. Cranford Pharmacy opens its doors

C

ranford Pharmacy is now open. Sharing its site with the new ProMed medical centre at 115 Sherborne Street, the pharmacy offers a full range of dispensary services and health and beauty products from its attractive new premises. Malcolm Pearce, Pharmacist and owner of Cranford Pharmacy and St Albans Pharmacy in Edgeware Village, says “It is exciting to have the new building finished and to now have the pharmacy up and running. We have always had a close relationship with the ProMed medical centre. They were over the road from us at Edgeware Village before the earthquakes and now we are even closer to them, with a walk-through from the doctors to

the pharmacy.” Pharmacists are said to be ‘the health professional you see most often’ and Malcolm and his staff recognise the important role that the pharmacies have in maintaining the health of the community and supporting patients with specific health needs. You are likely to see some familiar faces other than Malcolm’s when you pop in to Cranford Pharmacy. Experienced staff from St Albans Pharmacy are assisting the approachable pharmacy staff who have joined the team at Cranford Pharmacy. The location of Cranford Pharmacy is proving very convenient for people travelling to and from the inner city via Cranford Street. There is off-street parking for the pharmacy as well as parking available on both sides of the road. The opening hours also make it easy to drop in on the way to or from work or school ‘drop-offs’ and ‘pick ups’. St Albans Pharmacy has been a central part of Edgeware Village for more than 30 years. Malcolm and his team are looking forward to offering the same community pharmacy service at Cranford Pharmacy to the wider St Albans community.

Horticulture Training for Ensuring a safe work place Christchurch Residents

I

f you would like to enjoy gardening, improve your property value, produce fresh vegetables and fruit or get a job within the horticulture industry, this flexible programme can help you gain the necessary skills. Skills Update Training Institute has partnered with CPIT Aoraki to offer an introductory ‘no fees’ horticulture blended learning course which combines both classrooms and online learning methods. Tutorials have been scheduled weekly during evenings including the occasional weekend field trips to suit those currently working full time or part time. Our experienced tutors, Ryan Young or Hamish Kelland, are also available by phone and

e-mail outside of classroom hours. Ryan, the winner of various horticultural awards and titles, says “as your learning facilitator, I will assist you throughout the duration of the programme and provide guidance for each assessment.” “I am passionate about sustainable horticulture and really enjoy working with students to achieve their study and educational goals” says Hamish, who has a wide range of experience across the industry as well as teaching in the tertiary sector. Enrolments are now open for 2016. Call or email our team today. Study over 40 weeks and earn the sought after National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3.

earning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings.

The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Irish dance

Give it a go! How to Jig...

burst into the spotlight in the 90s with the introduction of Michael Flatley's world famous 'Riverdance' show. The distinctive dance style with its rigid posture and rapid leg and foot movements had us all attempting a 'jig' at one time or another. There are many styles of Irish dance steps such as the reel, the right jig, the heavy jig, the single jig, the hornpipe, and the group ceili - but the best known would have to be the basic 'jig'. Derived from the French word 'gigue', meaning fiddle, the traditional jig is accompanied by a fiddle usually playing in 6/8 timing.

•Point your left foot in front of you • Step onto your left foot and bring your right foot into a closed position behind it, transferring your weight onto your right foot • Bring your left toe up to your right knee as you hop • Swing your left leg so that your left knee is pointing in front of you and your foot is by your right knee (this is also done while hopping) •Place your left foot on the ground behind you - the first of four steps backwards, left, right, left, right •Your weight should now be on your right foot, so that you can point your left foot in front of you •Repeat over and over...

WESTERN NEWS

Tuesday March 15 2016

Thursday 17th March ST PATRICK was born somewhere on the west coast of Britain and when he was 16 he was captured by raiding Irish ships and taken to Ireland to be sold as a slave. He was bought by a man called Milchu who put him to work shepherding his flock on a mountain side. One night Patrick had a dream in which he heard a voice telling him to leave the mountain side and go down to the coast where he would find a boat to take him back home. When he reached the coast he saw the boat, as the dream had promised, but unfortunately as he had no money the boat’s captain refused to take him.

While many of us take part in celebrating St Patrick's Day, there are probably few New Zealand's who know much about the

Patron Saint of Ireland

The boat sailed away, but wasn’t long at sea when a fierce storm blew up. The crew fearing death told the captain that it is vengeance for not letting the lad aboard. Out of fear they turned the boat around and went back for Patrick. Patrick went on to study to become a priest and eventually was made a bishop. In a recurring dream he heard the voices of the children of Ireland calling him back to teach them about God, so returned to Ireland and went straight to see his old captor Milchu. This is where Patrick began converting the Irish pagan people to Christianity. While trying to explain the Holy Trinity he is said to have used a shamrock leaf to demonstrate how there could be three separate parts to the shamrock but only one leaf - and so the shamrock symbol of Ireland was born. St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 as it is believed to be the date St Patrick died.
